Venezia FC New Stadium: Bosco dello Sport 2027

Venezia FC New Stadium: Inside the €300M+ Bosco dello Sport Project

Venezia FC is preparing for one of the biggest transformations in the history of the Italian football club: a move from the historic Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo to a new 18,500-seat stadium at the Bosco dello Sport development near Venice Marco Polo Airport.

The project could dramatically change both the fan experience and the economics of Venezia FC.

The new Venezia stadium will be capable of hosting Serie A football, rugby, international sporting events and concerts, with capacity increasing to approximately 24,400 spectators for major live events. Construction officially began in October 2025, with the City of Venice targeting an opening in spring 2027.

At the same time, Venezia FC itself is undergoing a major financial transformation.

A group led by sports and entertainment executives Tim Leiweke and Francesca Bodie invested in Venezia FC in 2026 as part of a €100 million capital raise. The new investors join an American-backed ownership group that has helped rebuild Venezia after the club was acquired out of bankruptcy in 2015.

Together, the new stadium and new investment could create an entirely different future for one of Italy's most unusual football clubs.

Where Is Venezia FC's New Stadium?

Venezia FC's new stadium is being constructed in Tessera, on the mainland northwest of central Venice and close to Venice Marco Polo Airport.

The stadium is part of the much larger Bosco dello Sport sports district.

The entire development covers approximately 116 hectares and is divided into five major construction projects: the stadium, a new indoor arena, new road connections between Tessera and the airport, internal infrastructure, and landscaping and green areas.

According to the City of Venice, the total investment in Bosco dello Sport exceeds €300 million.

This is an important distinction when discussing the project.

The widely reported €300 million-plus figure does not represent the cost of Venezia FC's football stadium alone. It represents the much larger sports and infrastructure development surrounding it.

In many ways, Bosco dello Sport is being designed as a new sports and entertainment district for Venice, with Venezia FC's stadium serving as one of its centerpieces.

How Big Will the New Venezia FC Stadium Be?

The new Venezia FC stadium will have approximately 18,500 seats for football matches.

That makes it considerably more suitable for modern top-flight football than Venezia's current home.

The stadium is being designed and certified to host Serie A matches as well as rugby and other sporting competitions.

But one of its most important features may have nothing to do with football.

For concerts, capacity can increase to approximately 24,400 spectators.

That ability to host large non-football events could become extremely valuable.

Modern stadiums increasingly operate as year-round entertainment businesses rather than venues that open only when their teams play.

Venezia's new stadium could potentially generate revenue from concerts, corporate events, hospitality, sponsorships, food and beverage sales and other activities throughout the year.

When Will Venezia FC's New Stadium Open?

The official cornerstone ceremony for the stadium was held on October 21, 2025.

The City of Venice said construction would take approximately 20 months, putting the planned completion and inauguration in spring 2027.

The project is already taking physical shape.

During a July 2026 inspection, Venice Mayor Simone Venturini and Italian Minister for Sport and Youth Andrea Abodi toured the construction site as work continued on both the new stadium and arena.

If the current timetable holds, Venezia FC will soon have one of the newest major football venues in Italy.

Venezia FC's Current Stadium: Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo

For stadium enthusiasts, replacing Venezia's existing ground creates an interesting contradiction.

The Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo is one of the most distinctive football stadiums in the world.

Located on Sant'Elena in the Venetian Lagoon, the Penzo is the second-oldest football stadium in Italy, behind only Genoa's Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

Its location makes attending a Venezia match unlike attending almost any other professional sporting event.

Supporters can travel through Venice and even approach the stadium by boat.

That unique setting has helped make the Penzo an important part of Venezia FC's identity.

But what makes the stadium special also creates limitations.

Its island location, relatively small capacity and aging infrastructure make expansion and modernization difficult. The stadium cannot easily provide the premium seating, corporate hospitality, transportation access, sponsorship inventory and year-round event capabilities of a modern venue.

Bosco dello Sport solves many of those problems.

Why Venezia FC Is Moving to the Mainland

Moving away from Sant'Elena may sacrifice some of the Penzo's character, but the new location could make Venezia FC significantly more accessible.

The Bosco dello Sport is being developed near Venice Marco Polo Airport, creating a completely different transportation environment.

Instead of placing the stadium deep within the historic city, the Tessera location connects the club more directly with mainland Venice, the wider Veneto region and international travelers.

For a football club trying to expand its audience, that could be extremely important.

Venezia is one of the world's most internationally recognized city names, but the football club has historically operated with a relatively small stadium and limited commercial infrastructure.

The new stadium could allow the club to better monetize the global power of the Venice brand.

Who Owns Venezia FC?

Understanding the new stadium also requires understanding Venezia FC's unusual recent history.

Venezia Football Club was originally founded in 1907 and has spent much of its history moving between Italy's top divisions.

Its greatest trophy remains the 1940-41 Coppa Italia.

But the club has also endured repeated financial crises.

Venezia went bankrupt following the 2004-05 season and again after the 2008-09 campaign. After another collapse, the club failed to register for Lega Pro in 2015.

That led to a major turning point.

In September 2015, a group of American investors acquired Venezia out of bankruptcy.

The new ownership helped produce a rapid revival.

Venezia earned promotion and brought in former AC Milan and Italian national team star Filippo Inzaghi as manager. The club subsequently climbed into Serie B and eventually returned to Serie A.

In February 2020, investor and former New York Stock Exchange CEO Duncan Niederauer reorganized the club and became president.

Venezia's American-backed ownership has continued evolving since then.

Venezia FC's €100 Million Investment and New Ownership

The biggest recent ownership development came in May 2026.

Venezia announced a significant minority investment from a vehicle led by Tim Leiweke and Francesca Bodie.

The transaction was part of a much broader €100 million fundraising effort conducted during the 2025-26 season to strengthen the club financially and support its ambitions in Italian and European football.

Leiweke became Co-Chairman of Venezia's Operating Committee alongside Rob Hamwee.

Bodie was selected to succeed Duncan Niederauer as Venezia FC president, while Niederauer retained a small minority stake in the ownership group.

The investment vehicle led by Leiweke and Bodie became Venezia's largest outside shareholder.

Another fascinating part of the transaction was the involvement of music superstar Drake, who became an investor in Venezia FC in 2024 and helped bring the parties together.

For stadium watchers, Leiweke's involvement is especially noteworthy because of his extensive background in sports, entertainment and venue development.

That expertise arrives at exactly the moment Venezia is preparing to move into its most important piece of new infrastructure in generations.

Venezia FC Wins the New Stadium Management Concession

Building a new stadium is important.

Controlling its operations can be even more important.

In April 2026, Venezia FC announced that its proposal had been selected in the tender process for the concession to manage the new Bosco dello Sport stadium.

That development could have major long-term financial implications.

European football clubs often struggle when they play in older publicly owned stadiums where they have limited control over commercial revenue.

Operating a modern venue can potentially give a club greater access to revenue from premium seating, hospitality, sponsorships, food and beverage, merchandise and non-matchday events.

The difference can be substantial.

Instead of Venezia simply playing approximately 20 home league matches each season, the stadium could become a year-round business.

How the New Stadium Could Increase Venezia FC's Value

The new stadium could ultimately have a significant effect on the valuation of Venezia FC.

Football clubs generate revenue from several primary sources, including television rights, sponsorships, ticket sales, merchandise and player transfers.

For clubs that move between Serie A and Serie B, television revenue can be particularly volatile.

Relegation can dramatically alter a team's economics.

A successful stadium operation can provide more diversified revenue.

An 18,500-seat venue with modern hospitality areas can potentially generate substantially more revenue per spectator than an older stadium with limited premium facilities.

Then there are concerts.

With the stadium configured for approximately 24,400 concertgoers, Venezia could have access to events completely unrelated to the football calendar.

The venue could also create new opportunities for naming rights, sponsorship packages, restaurants, retail, merchandise and corporate hospitality.

For investors, those revenue streams can make the football club a much more interesting business.

Venice Could Become Part of the Stadium Business

There is another advantage few football clubs can replicate: the city itself.

Venice is one of the most famous tourist destinations on Earth.

Millions of international visitors already know the Venezia name, even if they know little about Italian football.

Venezia FC has increasingly capitalized on that connection through fashion-focused kits, merchandise and international branding.

The club's orange, black and green identity has developed an audience well beyond traditional Italian football supporters.

A modern stadium close to an international airport could push that strategy further.

Tourists visiting Venice could attend matches. International sponsors could associate themselves with both the club and the city. Merchandise can reach customers who view Venezia FC as part football team and part lifestyle brand.

The club has already expanded its commercial efforts, including international merchandising and sponsorship partnerships announced in 2026.

The stadium gives that strategy a physical home.

What Bosco dello Sport Means for Venezia FC

The new Venezia FC stadium is ultimately about much more than replacing the Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo.

It represents a change in what Venezia FC could become.

The Penzo connects the club to more than a century of football history and gives Venezia one of the most memorable stadium settings anywhere in Europe.

Bosco dello Sport offers something different: scale.

An 18,500-seat football stadium, approximately 24,400-person concert configuration, modern transportation connections and a surrounding sports district create commercial possibilities that simply don't exist at the Penzo.

Combine that with a €100 million capital raise, experienced sports investors and Venezia's growing international brand, and the project becomes one of the more interesting stadium developments in European football.

The big question is whether Venezia FC can use the new stadium to establish itself as a sustainable Serie A club.

If it can, the move from a historic island stadium to a modern sports district near Venice Marco Polo Airport could prove to be one of the most important moves in the club's history.
